Chinaland: Through a Glass, Darkly is the memoir of a Chinese American woman that touches, with humor and irony, on issues of race, ethnicity, culture and faith. The writer's life takes her, often clueless and bumbling, across countries and continents, from Taiwan where she was born to Canada where she was raised, to England and Europe, to China, back to England and finally to America. It's a journey she hopes will lead to a clearly defined identity. It does not. But it does result in a unique, wide-eyed experience of life as a Chinese citizen in Red China in the 1970s and early 1980s, from the latter part of the Cultural Revolution steeped in Maoism to the beginnings of Deng Xiaoping's modernization and a shockingly ineluctable traditionalism. It is an intriguing journey that colors every aspect of her life even after she manages to circle back to the beginning of her journey in North America.

林东宁（Peggy Lin) 出生台湾，一岁随父母移民加拿大，在加拿大长大成人。林东宁出身名门望族，高祖父是大名鼎鼎的台湾首富、“板桥林本源园邸”主人林维源，曾祖父是富贾一方、厦门鼓浪屿“菽庄花园”主人林尔嘉。光绪十四年(一八八八)，为了整建清廷海军，林维源捐巨资二百万两白银。却被慈嬉太后挪用去重修供自己玩乐的颐和园。在大陆曾流传有“一个颐和园，林家捐了半个”的说法。1894 年中日甲午战争，清廷战败签订了丧权辱国的《马关条约》，不仅赔款2亿两白银，还把台湾割让给日本。此后受命为清廷督办全台团防大臣的林维源不得不携眷弃台内渡。 

尽管板桥林家前辈们为国捐献数以百万计巨资而最后无一例外地付之东流，他们的后人并没有放弃救国的希望。1971 年 4 月，第七届中英庚款奖学金化学专业得主、时任加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学物理化学教授的林慰桢博士，偕妻子刘树璋、女儿林东宁(Peggy)结束在丹麦哥本哈根澳斯特研究所为期一年的研究工作后，绕道巴黎，从中国驻法国使馆取得入境签证，乘法航飞往上海，回到他侨居国外几十年 如一日(1940-1971)、梦寐以求、朝思暮想的故乡参观访 问。自那以后，他利用每一个休学年回中国大陆讲学研究。 

两年后从加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学英语系毕业不久的林东宁先行父母一步。 于1973 年 11 月飞往香港，乘火车到达深圳，徒步经罗湖入境后，在广州乘飞机到达北京，开始了她第一年在北京语言学院、第二年在北京大学中文系的学习生活。 

1977 年春节后，林东宁结束福建师范大学英语系一学期的教学，被调到中央编译局参加《毛泽东选集》五卷的英文译审工作。1978 年 2 月，林东宁放弃了加拿大籍，加入中国国籍， 成为一名中华人民共和国公民。《中国青年报》曾以题为“北美洲燕子飞回来”加以报道。1980年 7月15 日，《中国青年报》发表了她的“遗憾吗?” 改革开放后 ，1984年留学英国基尔大学，1986年获英国文学硕士，后赴美国马里兰大学研究院学习，1994年获英国文学博士学位。 

《Chinaland: through a glass, darkly》是林东宁博士用英文撰写的自传回忆录。《Chinaland 》记述了作者一生探寻自己生为中国人而从小在加拿大、英国长大，回中国学习、工作十年后，辗转英国、定居美国的不同社会、文化和语言的曲折坎坷经历。
